Frequently Asked Questions
Will I receive a diagnosis?
Our thorough assessment process gathers extensive information to reach an accurate conclusion. Sometimes this may mean that the suspected diagnosis is not confirmed, or a different diagnosis better explains your symptoms. We encourage you to keep an open mind throughout the assessment process.
Can you prescribe ADHD medication after diagnosis?
No. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Adults diagnosed with ADHD will need to see a psychiatrist for medication, while children will need to see a Paediatrician or Child Psychiatrist. You’ll need a GP referral for these specialists.
Can I use an autism diagnosis for NDIS or Disability Support Pension applications?
Our assessment reports can be used as supporting evidence for NDIS Access Requests, however:
- Additional documentation is typically required
- The NDIS requires confirmation from at least one other provider (allied health practitioner, Paediatrician, Psychiatrist, or Clinical Psychologist)
- A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) from an Occupational Therapist is often helpful
- While we provide comprehensive documentation, final decisions rest with the NDIS/NDIA
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
At Alpha Psych Solutions, we are experienced in helping clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or secondary psychiatric disorders such as anxiety or mood symptoms. We can help by teaching clients the following:
- How to recognise and modify automatic maladaptive thoughts.
- How to recognising and regulate emotional experiences.
- Improving the ability to read and interpret social cues to better understand social
interactions. - Modifying their own behaviour in response.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and ASD
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a treatment approach that can be applied to help clients identify and modify cognitive activity that may be causing problems in their daily lives. It is important to note that the goal of CBT is not to change the client’s entire personality. Instead, for clients with ASD, CBT can:
- Teach new cognitive and behavioural skills that were never learned.
- Teach compensatory strategies for deficits that cannot be changed.
- Facilitate self-acceptance.
- Teach strategies to decrease or prevent symptoms of comorbid mental health
- Problems such as anxiety disorders and depression.
At Alpha, our psychologists believe that with the right support and guidance, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder can achieve a greater sense of well-being and lead fulfilling lives. We work with clients to create personalised treatment plans that are tailored to their specific needs, with the goal of improving their quality of life.
